In May 1995, Dean and Shelley Alexander signed on as publishers of The Shepherd’s Guide and set up office in their basement. Learning the ropes of a new business and juggling the demands of a baby and a toddler kept life interesting. Dean drove thousands of kilometres in their only vehicle, a 1987 Astro van, to meet Christians at their offices, construction sites, kitchen tables, board rooms or coffee shops. Soon two more babies were added to their family as The Shepherd’s Guide took over more of the basement, the garage and the dining room. The children grew up learning to stuff mailings and package copies of the guides in plastic. When older they spent long days on the road helping their dad deliver those copies of The Shepherd’s Guide to Churches, Bookstores and businesses.

“Like any business we’ve had our share of computer frustrations, business headaches, and delays in production. That’s the nature of business in a fallen world. What makes it all worthwhile is the front row seat where we see God at work in the Christian community. Every week we connect with faithful Christian business people serving God in their towns; we see the tireless work of Christian ministries reaching the lost and disadvantaged; we experience unexpected answers to prayer; and the most beautiful part is seeing God at work in Christ followers of every denomination.”

Dean and Shelley’s four children are now in their 20’s and 30’s. The three eldest are married and the youngest is at University. They recently added the prestigious title of ‘Grandparenting’ to their resume.

“God is very good to us.”
