Reader Reviews

Christine Ford rated “Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess:” a 3 out of 5 Stars
The book seems to offer more in the way of her research then time explaining how to put these exercises into action. I feel like the research is good, that I agree with WHY we want to take control of our thoughts, but I reached the end of the book before truly understanding HOW.

I really want to do these exercises, but she spends way too much time on why (the first 2/3 of the book!) and not nearly enough time on how to do it. There is a gap in her explanation of putting these things into practice.

Most people can agree it’s important, we don’t need convincing, which seems to be the main focus of the book. It’s more important to understand HOW, this should have been the focus of the book.

I'm sure there are a lot of people that would find this book helpful. For me, unfortunately, it was just a whole deja-vu experience. Like I read this before in Dr. Leaf's other books, like The Switch On Your Brain. I even completed the workbook for it. I don't think I learned one new helpful thing from this new book. But, hey, maybe that's just me.

I guess no editor eye has laid upon these pages. She goes on and on about her research’s scientific concepts, making same definitions over and over again which in the end does not go somewhere. Each chapter she claims that her 5 step technique is very applicable although she forgot to tell how to apply them. In order to be sure that I was not skipping anything I inspected the index again but suprise, suprise I missed NOTHING and there is no practical evidence of her magnum opus: 5 steps. What are they can anybody enlighten me please?

Vinay Sutaria rated “Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess:” a 1 out of 5 Stars
Too much jargon. No clear steps. Without a professional background in neuroscience, this book doesn’t serve any purpose and seems like a research paper.

Confused by the points the author wants to express or convey.

We have agency with our minds. We aren’t stuck the way we are. Dr. Caroline Leaf discusses how our minds have neuroplasticity-the ability of neural networks in the brain to change through growth and reorganization-which is great news for those of us who aren’t always happy with the way we are thinking. She has created a system called the Neurocycle that helps the reader transition from just being aware of toxic and chaotic thinking “to being empowered to catch these thoughts in their early stages, manage them, and improve your overall peace and well-being”. She provides mind-management training and teaches self-regulation to “take advantage of our brain to rework and rewire our thoughts”. She gives practical examples on how to use the Neurocycle to develop good habits, break bad ones, develop mental toughness, detox from trauma, and more. The book itself is challenging to read, but the author argues reading it helps do the brain-building work necessary to increase mental resilience, which makes you smarter and mentally healthier, so it’s worth the work.

Everyone can implement these steps and experience life change

Loving how practical this read has been. Dr Leaf has taken a complex subject and given it a simple language and practical steps to apply. Throughout I felt empowered. I felt a fresh hope that I can change my life. I gained understanding of how my thoughts are formed. I realized just how much power I have to change the way I think, my habits and destiny. The steps given are easy to understand and practical. Applicability is the competitive advantage of this book Now the real work begins.

I’ve downloaded the accompanying app and will be working out these steps and follow through for 63 days. All I can say that on day one I really felt layers already come off... the process really shines a light on some toxic thought patterns I had not acknowledged and also highlighted the root cause. To 62 more days!

Fantastic book with an amazing premise that we are in control of our minds and perhaps therapy and medication isn’t right for all of us or in fact needed if we have the tools to manage mentally. This book does a great job of outlining the information but it is long and dry. I had a hard time finishing this book due to the dry nature of the second half. While the information is 5/5 I found parts hard to read and rather boring in contrast to such fascinating information.

Enlightening about the functions of the mind. The book has a lot of information that can be applied to control one's mind. As narrated it is research-based and tried tools to bring about changes in one's structure of the brain. The concept of neuroplasticity much talked about these days, has been explained in simple language. The whole knowledge about the brain and the mind has also been narrated in form of an actionable manual. Great effort by Dr. Leaf, for which she deserves huge credit.

Doctor Leaf has been a HUGE Blessing to me! I truly believe the Holy Spirit led me to her at just the "perfect time"! As a Functional Medicine Health Coach, I know everything begins in the mind, but Dr. Leaf takes it even further to explain in a tangible way! She is rooted in God's love and for that I am so thankful for her, her wisdom & knowledge, and this book! Thank YOU Dr. Leaf! God Bless

Even the endorsements are inspiring! I have been a fan of Dr. Leaf's work since 2006 when I was living in a combat zone in Iraq. Since then, I have been amazed at how "fearfully and wonderfully made" we have been created to be. The neurocycle is practical, scientific, and scripturally sound. I don't use the word "life changing" lightly, and Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess is just that!

It took me 9 weeks to get through this one. There is some useful information on brain building for learning, detoxing your thoughts, rewiring your brain, etc. I took a few notes on the most useful parts. But the writing was very tedious. I really enjoy learning about certain sciences, yet this was a difficult book to stay committed to.
