Picture 1 “Go into all the world and make disciples” has never been so accessible. God has brought the world to us! We have an unprecedented privilege—without the cost of a trip, or the need to learn another language, without even leaving our comfort zone, we can make friends of the nations, enjoy the rich cultural diversity that is now in our city and offer students opportunity to encounter Jesus and the Bible.

Picture 2 Through our volunteer involvement with international students, we’ve already met people from more than 60 countries around the world, and counting! Last year 19,000 internationals held study permits for London. The number keeps rising, and provides a unique opportunity for Canadians to connect with international students. Some are looking to study and get a few years of work experience in Canada. Others come with their families and advanced degrees from their home countries; they are starting a new life here by learning English and doing further studies, hoping to get permanent residence and citizenship. Canada needs these students! With over 1,000 Canadians turning 65 every day, and not nearly that many turning 20, it’s easy to see that immigration is essential to maintain the workforce. Right now over 80% of our population growth is attributable to immigration.

Imagine being thousands of miles away from your homeland, family, culture and all that is familiar. You have no friends and absolutely everything is new and different, including the weather. You have the added stress of looking for a part-time job to help cover high international student fees and living expenses, the challenge of studying in your second or third language, and you are dealing with culture shock. Picture 3 Special holidays come, Canadian students go home to celebrate, and you are left alone feeling more isolated than ever. We think it’s time for Canadian followers of Jesus to step up! One of the greatest desires of students is to have Canadian friends. In opening their homes and hearts and offering hospitality, ordinary people and families can make a significant difference in the students’ lives.

When hospitality turns to friendship, you may connect in other ways by helping them find their way around the city, taking them shopping for winter clothes, assisting with language and cultural understanding, inviting them to come with you to church if they are interested, and including them in your family events. You might become their Canadian family!

Picture 2 Friends for Dinner is a program developed to assist Canadian churches and followers of Jesus to get connected with international students and invite them into your home for a holiday meal at a time that the host chooses. Both hosts and students sign up at www.friendsfordinner.ca and are then matched based on the information shared regarding date availability, etc. Wonderful relationships have begun over the dinner table!

When you see someone who looks like they might be an international student, we encourage you to talk with them, invite them for coffee and take a few minutes to get to know them. You might be the first person here to show hospitality. If we all take steps to reach out, London will be an even friendlier place.

Picture 5 If you know international students, www.everystudent.com is a wonderful place for them to explore questions about life and God. It is available in over 40 languages!

Picture 6 We are volunteers with International Student Ministries Canada, eager to see every international student befriended by a follower of Jesus. We can help equip and encourage you to share in the blessings of this ministry. In fact, you can start now! www.everyinternational.com has many videos that will be helpful in understanding students. Sign up and it’s free!

If you are interested in knowing about opportunities and other ways you can be involved, please email and share your story, your gifts and areas of interest. We look forward to serving the Lord together!
