Do you know what “nacre” is? I didn’t either. On Friday April 5, 2019 London Pregnancy Family Services Centre (LPFSC) held their annual fundraiser, Pearls & Treasures. A pearl is unique, has imperfections and no two are alike. A natural pearl begins its life when a foreign object, like a sand particle, becomes accidently lodged into the oyster’s soft inner body refusing to be expelled. To protect itself the oyster begins to secrete a smooth, hard crystalline substance called “nacre” around the irritant. Over time the particle of sand is recoated over and over again encased in a silky crystalline coating ultimately forming the lustrous gem called a pearl. Like the pearl, each of us begins our life journey unfinished and through life’s trials God’s Love continually coats us within and without, refining us to become His priceless pearl. The women and families that LPFSC walks alongside are those precious pearls and their babies are the treasures.

Abortion in the US is heading in a horrific direction with New York recently passing the law to allow late term abortions. Other states will follow. Canada is no better. There are no laws protecting the unborn. Many women do not want to have an abortion but feel it is their only option due to their circumstances. This is where LPFSC starts the journey alongside these women giving them a voice, hope and letting them know they are not alone.

LPFSC is a non-profit non-governmental organization. All operating costs are fundraised and nothing is charged to clients. This small building on Piccadilly Street is a beacon of hope filling in gaps of support and provision for clients for over 25 years.

Highlights from the evening

Over 350 guests had the opportunity to bid on live and silent auctions items, to purchase balloons, chocolates, jelly beans, Cora Cups for prizes, tickets to win a beautiful pearl jewelry set and purchase by donation handcrafted rings created by Arielle Thompson. The goal of this evening was to raise $50,000 to provide professional counseling, in house programming and to ensure the building was functional and safe for client use.

My ponderings next morning

“My husband and I have attended the LPFSC fundraisers for 15 years and while each one was special, last night I sensed the fragrance of Christ in the room in a way that I have not felt before. Silence was palpable when brave women walked in front of us carrying their Cardboard testimonies sharing words on one side they chose from a source of deep pain then flipped over to share words of salvation chosen from a source of deep healing. As Lori spoke I believe the Holy Spirit worked through her to refresh and remind us that it is ONLY through Christ’s love that we are transformed to become more like Him.

Three LPFSC families who shared their stories have strangely become part of who I am for are we not told in the Bible that “If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.” (1 Cor. 12:26) Guided by the Holy Spirit their conversations shed light in dark places. It was illuminating “nacred” if you will…producing the lustrous beauty of a pearl sharing the treasure of a child being saved through a visit to a house by the side of the road on Piccadilly Street…Divine Love being offered over and over again changing the object of that love. Does that sound familiar?

A young couple from Iran arriving to attend Western University discovered they were expecting. With few belongings, and a limited budget this baby would complicate everything. Abortion seemed the only solution. They were directed to LPFSC where “two angels, Linda and Lori “spoke with them. They kept their child and later the family was adopted by a doula and her husband. LPFSC acting as mentor and friend supplied everything they needed.

Next a young girl enduring an abusive childhood at the age of 14 found herself to be pregnant after a rape. Alone she followed through with the abortion. She became pregnant 12 years later and although facing extreme pressure to abort the child she found herself at LPFSC’s front door and ended up keeping her treasure. She was a single mother on welfare for two years, went back to school and in 2020 will become a lawyer. She said there was nothing that LPFSC wouldn’t help her work through.

The last story was about a young woman in crisis that LPFSC helped heal from an abortion many years ago. She had no help and felt victimized by the abortion industry. She was told she would “get through the day “and now knows that you don’t get through the day. You have to live with this choice for the rest of your life. Now happily married with lovely daughters of her own, she said,” I root my self- worth now in God or even my angel baby in heaven. I know they love me, because God has never let me down and everything that happened to me, ultimately is what led me here to give this speech tonight, to help you all see what this Center does for women who need support in the aftermath of an abortion.”

The pearl is a perfect simile for the Kingdom of Heaven. (Matt.13:45) It is a valuable treasure that needs no polishing or cutting by man. It comes to us complete and lustrous created by God through nature. The layers of “nacre” forming the pearl reflect light and pick up the surrounding colors it touches. It is also a perfect simile for a mother whose child reflects her loving choices.

Lori stated at the opening “We believe that you will be moved tonight by witnessing the power of God’s hand upon this ministry.” Not only could we sense the Holy Spirit moving among us, through those brave young women but over $50,000 was raised. To God be all the Glory.
