Deuteronomy 30: 19, 20: “I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants,  by loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days, that you may live in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.”

If you have lived in London any length of time, you have probably come across volunteers with the London Area Right to Life Association (LARTLA) in their silent prayer vigil to end abortion at the corner of Wellington and Commissioners. LARTLA’s Annual Gala Fundraiser, though, highlighted their commitment to life from conception to natural death in focusing on assisted suicide.

This once controversial procedure, legalized in 2016 in Canada, has been quietly gaining acceptance in the Western world. For keynote speaker Alex Schadenberg, however, legalized assisted suicide is a result of our “culture of death” and to be boldly opposed.

Schadenberg, a past president of London Right to Life and the current Executive Director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition (EPCC), said that although assisted suicide Is portrayed as a compassionate thing to do and the best way to die, there are already efforts to extend the right to assisted suicide to teens, people with a psychiatric condition, and incompetent people who had previous indicated their desire for assisted suicide. Schadenberg expressed the greatest alarm with the fact that that doctors engaging in assisted suicide are their own oversight and are thus able to push the boundary without any accountability. He also presented the previews of two excellent documentaries produced by the coalition: “The Euthanasia Deception” and “Fatal Flaws: Legalizing Assisted Death”, (click screen to watch trailer from The Euthanasia Deception).

This years “Youth for Life Award” was presented to the Balasch family. The family has five children, Joseph, Hannah, Matthew, Lydia and Deborah, who participate in all the LARTLA events, and they are an inspirational reminder that you are never too young or old to participate in the battle for life.

The Gala was well hosted again by the Hellenic Centre, and well attended by volunteers and supporters. LARTLA continues year around working to protect the sanctity of life and they are always looking for interested people to become involved.
