Psalm 10:14: But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted. You consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.

Matthew 25: 3:For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.

Mully Children’s Family (MCF) is a Christian ministry based in Kenya that works with the disadvantaged, especially abandoned youth. Since its’ inception in 1989 they have taken in over 23,000 children.

Charles Mulli is an unlikely champion of the people. He himself was left alone as a child when his father abandoned the family and his mother left to find a place for them, never to return. Finding Christ in his teens Mulli soon found he had a gift as an entrepreneur and became one of the richest men in his area. In 1989, though, Mulli was inspired to sell all he had to begin ministering to the many street kids in his city.

One criticism of relief organizations is that they create dependency in those they serve, but Mulli’s vision and drive as an entrepreneur has taken MCF in some unique directions. When the Mulli’s house and property were no longer sufficient to house all the abandoned youth they moved onto and developed a large plot of land in the country. Though the Mulli’s were not farmers by profession, they worked the land, digging wells, planting gardens, and generally redeeming the territory. In working the land the children are taught a work ethic and the ministry is able to provide it’s own food, selling the excess to help defray costs. They also have established schools, and many children have gone onto university and productive careers.

One inspiring and heartwarming part of the story is Mulli’s family. The influx of street youth in the family home was difficult for his wife Esther and their seven children. In the movie about their lives and ministry, “Mully,” the children describe their struggles with getting lost in the crowd in their own home, but the family was preserved throughout all of the turmoil and the Mulli children are still deeply involved. Currently the MCF family is involved with 3,000 children in 6 locations.

This year the movie “Mully” was released, a well produced and inspiring combination of documentary and dramatization telling the story of Mulli and MCF. If you missed the movie in theatres the DVD is well worth a purchase. The Mully Children’s Family now has affiliated ministries in Canada and the USA, allowing those of us a half a world away to be involved in this life bringing ministry.
